But we are
dedicated anglers who believe in conservation; no Tarpon
are ever killed, even strongly encouraging that the fish
are released boat side without being taken out of the
water.
Our members use spinning or
conventional tackle or fly and we fish the waters of Lee
County. Our meetings are held at Bonita Bills Restaurant
at Fort Myers Beach on the first Wednesday of each month
during our Tarpon season. Newsletters are sent out eight
or nine times through the year to keep club members
informed as to what is going on. We have a tackle clinic
in the spring, picnic in the summer and our awards
banquet is held in November. We hold many different
types of hunts during our season and our club schedule
lists all the details.
Due to our Tarpon predecessors, our club is the oldest
Tarpon fishing club in the world (see our history
section). Located on the west coast of Florida we have
this superb game fish right in our bays, estuaries and
creeks as well as in the Gulf of Mexico. No expensive
offshore boats or equipment is needed; a small but
seaworthy craft is all you really need. It is even
becoming popular to fish for the “Silver Kings” from a
kayak. In the summer and fall months Tarpon are off the
beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel to over 150 pounds
weight, in very shallow water. No matter what time of
the year, to “jump” or catch such a spectacular feisty
game fish will give the angler such a fight that the
memory is never to be forgotten. Our club does not
register Tarpon less than 50 lbs with Florida’s
conventional tackle record set at 243 lbs.
